This is the beginning
and end of the Pagan year. At this time we reflect on what has gone
by in the year past. We try and take stock of our actions and find
ways to live better lives in the year that is to come. This is perhaps
the most popular of Sabbats even though it has a serious connotation and
the work is normally very complex. It is said that the veil
between those who have passed before us and this reality is thin at this
time and that we can visit souls who have gone over for instruction and
divination

Many types of divination
are practiced at this rite. Dark Mirrors - Fire Scrying - Tarot cards
- and of course the Crystal Ball of renown. It is said that this is the
time of the Crone and it is incumbent upon us to see whatever wisdom she
is willing to part with on our behalf.

This is also the final
harvest of the year traditionally and people would still be able to come
together for this important day. When travel was still slow because
of using horses or carts it took days to come to a meeting of any size
and this was the last of the year for many people until the spring thaw.
Many people would take oaths for the Priesthood at this time and final
Handfastings were sometimes accomplished at this time as well as initiations,
naming’s, and Children’s blessings.

Contracts announced
at Beltane were often taken care of at this time. Marriage contracts
would be arranged and young couples would state their intentions to be
Hand-fasted in the next year. Households were started anew and all things
that were of legal interest by the community were often seen to at this
time in the yearly calendar.
