The Planet Mars

Scientific Facts:
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun with a mass about 1/10 that of the Earth and diameter approximately 4,255 miles. Mars revolves about the Sun with a sidereal period of 687 Earth days and rotates once in 24 hrs. 37 min. Diurnal and seasonal changes closely resemble those on the Earth, but its night temperatures are thought to be very low. Its daytime temperatures, especially in the equatorial region, are comparable to those on the Earth. Since 1965 satellites have studied and photographed Mars. The surface is pitted with craters, like the Moon's. The "canals" that can be observed with a telescope are optical illusions. The atmosphere is very rarefied and is composed of 97% carbon dioxide, a little carbon monoxide, oxygen and traces of water. Mars has 2 small satellites, Phobos and Deimos.
