Potentially Dangerous Plants 
 
Please familiarize yourself with this chart before you start mixing and using plants for aromatherapy, bath bags, tea, tisanes, oils, remedies or any other use.  The plants listed below should not be used specifically as essential oils due to reactions that can happen.  This is just a small sampling of potentially dangerous plants.  Before starting any herbal therapy or using any herb it is highly recommended that you get a good herb book with a complete list of harmful herbs.

Basil Can harm some skin tissue due to allergic reaction in some people.
Bergamot -  (Photo toxic) If used in skin oil it can cause a burn when exposed to sun, or sun lamps.
Camphor Prolonged inhalation can cause a sever headache in some individuals.
Cinnamon -  (Skin irritant) Do not anoint or use in a bath directly.  
Can combine with salt for baths.
Clary Sage Prolonged inhalation can cause headache and should not be combined with alcohol. 
Clove - (Skin irritant) Do not anoint or use in direct baths. It can be cut by using salt for baths. 
Fennel bitter - (Convulsive) Can cause epileptic attack as well as act as an abortifacient on pregnant women.
Frankincense -  (skin irritant) Since the oils are very volatile they should not be used directly on skin.
Hyssop -  (Convulsive) Can cause epileptic attack as well as act as an abortifacient on pregnant women.
Lemon -  (Skin irritant) Can cause an allergic reaction in some people.  Don’t use in baths at all.
Lemon Balm -  (irritant) Do not use to anoint or directly in any bath, can be cut with salt for bath.
Lemon grass -  (irritant) Do not use to anoint or directly in any  
bath, can be cut with salt for bath.
Lemon Verbena -   (irritant) Very volatile and should not be used as an oil if the hands touch it.
Marjoram -  (abortifacient) Not to be used on pregnant women at any time.
Mugwort -  (transdermal) Should not be used in direct touch with skin for long periods of time.
Myrrh -  (abortifacient) May cause skin irritation, and should never be used for pregnant women.
Oregano - (irritant) May cause a rash in people who have an allergy to the herb itself.
Penny Royal -  (abortifacient) Never use on pregnant women or let it be used in any bath salt etc.
Peppermint -  (irritant) Can be a problem for people who have an allergy to the herb itself.
Rue Should not be used at all on anyone for any reason, can cause severe reactions.
Sage -   (Convulsive) Can cause epileptic seizure, and it is not recommended for people with high blood pressure.
Thyme -  (irritant) Can cause breathing problems in some people.
