Basics
By Rowann
Years ago when I was just beginning to learn about Wicca and Paganism I had visions of casting spells out into the winds and having instant gratification.  Of course, I really had no idea what I was doing or how it all worked.  I just knew that I was searching for a belief system that followed along with what I felt inside to be true.  I was brought up Baptist but really couldn't reconcile my feelings to the Baptist beliefs, much to the chagrin of my parents and family.  They love me dearly and will always stand by me, but they really don’t understand my beliefs or my rejection of the Christian god.
I started by studying Wicca with a High Priestess.  She led me to books that I could read and lessons that I could do and generally answered any question that I had.  In this aspect, I was very lucky.  I had a mentor.  Lots of people are not so lucky and have to follow the quest on their own.  This can be a much harder row to hoe.  Hard, but not impossible.  You have to be willing to read.  You can't just expect to have someone open up the top of your head and pour in everything they know.  I have learned that being a practicing Pagan means that you have to become a permanent student.
There are, however, some basics that might give you a jump-start in your studies.  I’ll try to put some of them here, but remember, these are very basic explanations.  Also, they are my beliefs and ideas, so you will undoubtedly come across opposing ideas on other sites and in books.  If you have any specific questions feel free to email us, broad sweeping generalized questions though will generally get the response that you need to go and read up on your question and come back when you have a specific detailed question.
These basics are not in any special order, they are listed as they came to mind.
We Believe...
that there is a universal power that we can draw upon.
that there are different aspects of this power that can be labeled God and Goddess or male and female.
that each person is responsible for their actions.
that there is no universal absolution for being evil.  What you do will effect you forever.
that each action has a triple reaction.  What you do will come back at you three fold.
that all people are equal, there is no discrimination or prejudice in Wicca.
that all people live many life times, returning to this plane until they have learned enough to move to a higher plane.
that there is no “Devil”.  There are only the powers of good and evil that reside in each person and the use of these powers is what creates the ebb and flow of the world.
that there many different roads that people can take to reach the higher plane.  What is right for me may not necessarily be right for you.

Be sure and read the pages on Beliefs.

Spells:
must never be done with harmful intent, this breaks the one main rule of Wicca.
must be done after having thought about all the consequences of the spell happening.
must never try to create a destiny for another person that might not be in the best interests for that person.
are used to help us visualize our wants and needs.
are merely physical symbols of our desires.
may be done with no symbols, pomp or hoopla.  They may just be done in your own mind.

Be sure and read the pages on Candle Magic, Plants for Sabbats, and Altars.
One of the main premises to understand is that what we are practicing is basically an Earth based religion.  We honor the Earth.  After all, she is our home.  She is like a great mother, taking care of her children.  In honoring the Earth we recognize the elements that are part of the Earth.  Water, Wind, Air, and Fire.   We incorporate these elements into our spells and rituals to help us use the Earth's natural power to accomplish our desires.
Blessed Be,
Rowann
